OUTRIGHT LIBERTARIANS (video interview)

my interview with some radical gay libertarians at this year's s.f. pride. i ask them about michael moore, global warming, corporate monopolies, the presidential candidates...unfortunately, they got it wrong about ron paul. he voted *against* the federal defense of marriage act. but ron paul and libertarians generally part ways on immigration issues (if only they knew more about the north american union proposals). enjoy!

Thanks for the coverage of our event. The gentleman in the video is Chris Maden, a longtime member of Outright.

Just a quick note -- Ron Paul voted neither for nor against the Defense of Marriage Act, since he was not in Congress when that Clinton-era statute was passed. Ron Paul has repeatedly stated that he supports that bill, which bans federal recognition of gay relationships for tax, immigration or benefits purposes.

Ron Paul *did* vote against the Federal Marriage Amendment -- an amendment to the Constitution that would ban gay marriage in all 50 states, along with civil unions and similar arrangements. He did not vote against it due to his concern for gay rights -- Paul, in fact, supports federal and state laws banning recognition of same-sex relationships -- but because he didn't believe the Constitution was an appropriate venue to insert such a law.

Hope that's helpful.

And even when opposing the Federal Marriage Amendment, his support for DOMA:

“If I were in Congress in 1996, I would have voted for the Defense of Marriage Act…”

And in stark contrast to Ron Paul's positions, the current Libertarian Party Platform plank on Sexuality and Gender:

The 1976 Libertarian Party Platform planks on Victimless Crimes and Discrimination (this basic wording was still in place when Paul ran as a Libertarian in 1988, demonstrating that he's gotten a lot more socially conservative in the past 20 years):
